The main scope of this project is to develop an autonomous, sovereign EU military SSA capability that is interoperable, integrated and harmonized with the EU-SST Framework initiative for the protection of European MS Space assets and services. It will also enable appropriate response to natural and manmade threats.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The overall goal of the EU-SSA-N project is to develop a common framework to help establish a networked space surveillance and space objects identification/tracking/characterization capability at the European level. It will be built on national  SSA capabilities for military and civil purposes, interoperable with the EU SST support framework, with the aim of supporting the development of a shared recognised space picture (RSP).

The resulting capability, for which the EU-SSA-N project will develop the requirements, will include tasking tools and specific software for data fusion, processing, exploitation and products dissemination.

OBJECTIVES/PRODUCTS

The project objectives include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • agree on a shared understanding of SSA for military purposes in terms of definitions and on a high-level architecture as a common reference;
  • agree on principles and data policy rules to exchange SSA requests, data, products and services;
  • define high-level military needs (Common Staff Target – CST) for a multinational SSA network for military purposes;

define shared baseline requirements (Common Staff Requirements – CSR) in order to enable the EU-wide networking of national Space/SSA Operations Centres, by enhancing interoperability (through the definition of common networks, interfaces, and shared security protocols) and improving sensor design and coverage to optimize the network.
